Helpless sinners desperately clinging to Christ

Welcome to the home of Christ Presbyterian Church on the web. We’re glad you stopped by. Maybe you’re here because you’re wondering who Christ Presbyterian is. We’ll get to that elsewhere. Perhaps a more important question is, who is the church? When Christ Presbyterian says that we are a church, what do we mean? There are probably a fair number of good ways to answer this question. One way would be to center attention on worship. This is what the church is for, namely, worshiping God. Unlike “fellowship” or “community activism,” “worship” reflects a fundamental, and defining dimension of the  church.

Another fundamental and defining dimension of the church is our dependence upon Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sin and continued grace for perseverance in the battle against the same. The church is, according to our Confession of Faith, the collection of all those who profess the true religion, together with their children.

Part of what this means is that the church is a communion of sinners (there are no other kinds of people in the world - Romans 3.19-23) who profess that their confidence for right standing before God is found wholly in Christ. If we pretend not to be sinners, we cannot be the church; we have departed from the true religion (1 John 1.8). If we admit our sin, but rely upon ourselves, our obedience, some past or present experience, our orthodoxy, or any other thing that is not Christ, we likewise depart from the true religion and cease to be the church. Therefore, we affirm ourselves to be nothing more, and nothing less, than a communion of sinners, desperately clinging to Christ. His person and work constitute our only hope of rectitude and blessing; and this hope does not disappoint!
