A little bit about our ESL program:

“The other day a coworker told me he was just pulling my leg...
He wasn’t pulling anything, so what did he mean?”

American English is full of idioms and difficult phrases. Even vocabulary can be difficult, or getting pronunciation just right. These are areas where we can help.

There are a fair number of International members and regular attenders at Christ Presbyterian Church. Some profess faith in Christ; some do not. We love having the diversity that these people bring to our fellowship. In part because of this diversity, ESL is a good fit for us. But we’re not trained teachers. And we only speak English. If you hardly understand any English, we can’t teach you to speak it. What we can do, we’re glad to do, but we certainly have our limits!

We begin class by going over some common American idioms. We talk about what they mean, and learn to use them in conversation. There is ample opportunity to ask questions. After this, we give students an opportunity to practice reading and using English as we study the content and meaning of the Christian Scriptures.
